You’re not done. But you’re not sure what’s next.

That feeling. You’ve built a career. You’ve solved problems. You’ve led teams, delivered results. Navigated restructures and downturns. Political upheavals. You have a mountain of value.

And yet…

Something’s shifted. Maybe you’ve been “elbowed out” by younger voices. Maybe you’ve left corporate and you’re not sure what comes next. Maybe you’re still in the role but you don’t want a repeat of the last five years in the next five.

You look at your resume (or CV). It looks the same as it did in the 90s. Your LinkedIn profile? “Meh.” You have 253 connections. “Are they even still alive!?”

You’re uncertain. Perhaps for the first time in your life.

And you’re wondering: what now?

That’s where I come in. I’m a career transition coach. I work with executives and professionals over 50. And I help you answer that question. Cearly, practically, and without the “cringe” of self-promotion.

And it’s NOT just advice. It’s hands-on services too. Your resume. LinkedIn. A consulting profile. These are the assets that’ll take you forward to the next chapter. They’re hard to do yourself.

Here’s what’s below for you:

What a Career Transition Coach Does

I’ll be straight. I’m not a therapist. I’m not a life coach. I won’t ask you how you feel about your career. I’m a practical guide. I provide hands-on services too. Done-for-you. We have a problem. It’s solvable.

Here’s the problem: how do you reposition yourself for the next chapter (into the years beyond 50)?

Here’s how we solve that together:

First, we get clear on your direction and value. Not the job title. Or the list of responsibilities. Your desired direction. You could do so many things! But we have to narrow it down. Then we need to define your value. What problems do you solve? For who? What benefits do you deliver? What have you built, fixed, turned around, led (your evidence)? You have this in your head. But it needs to be extracted, sorted, prioritised, put in words. Clear, compelling.

Now, here’s what most career transition coaches do not do. It’s actually the hard part. The practical part. This is the ‘where the rubber hits the road’ part. I’ve been doing it for 20 years. 40,000 hours.

Second, we package your value. Your CV. Your LinkedIn profile. Your consulting profile (if you’re going that route). I call it your “Credibility & Communication Stack.” This is the toolkit you use when someone says, “send me your CV” or “tell me about yourself.”

Third, we position you. Not as someone “looking for work.” As someone with something to offer. Something specific. For a definite audience. You solve a particular set of problems. In a unique way. If you look like a job hunter… you’re in for a world of pain! My approach makes you sought-after.

Our work is not just advice. Or questions. It’s hands-on, done-for-you help.

DOES THIS SOUND INTERESTING SO FAR? you can skip straight to a one-to-one conversation with me. It’s exploratory. No pitch or pressure. You’ll walk away with ‘mind-spark’ ideas for your unique situation, even if we don’t end up working together.

The “Business YOU” Shift a Career Transition Coach Must Help You Make

Here’s a mind-shift that changes everything.

You’ve been an employee. With one, or a few, long-term ‘clients’—your employers. You’ve been reasonably safe. Now? You need to become a business. “Business YOU.” (And it comes with more options than you imagine, more opportunities, more freedom!)

That means two questions:

  1. What’s your product? Not your job title. Your product. The specific problems you solve. The specific value you deliver. The set of tools you bring. Your capability.
  2. Who’s your customer? Not “anyone who’s hiring.” Who has the problems you solve? What industry? What kind of company? What department? What keeps them up at night?

This is basic business. But most of us never apply it to ourselves. We wait for someone else—a recruiter, HR, a head-hunter—to figure it out for us. And they don’t have your interests at heart.

Hoping they care is not a strategy. Being passive will have us scrapping for work into our 70s.

A career transition coach helps you do the work. And then – a really helpful career transition coach – helps you package it. So the right people can find you.

Why a Career Transition Coach for Over-50s Specifically?

Why for over 50s? Because things change. Our priorities. Health (ask me, I know. When I turned 60, boom! 2 Years of ICU level illness, 5 surgeries, heart problems. I’m doing great now, but it kinda changed my outlook on work and life.) You still want to work. “Retire” isn’t in your vocab! You’re old school.

And added to that: there’s ageism. It’s wrong. It’s unfair. But it’s real. Some doors will close on us. Others won’t. We can rage against it. But in the end… it’s up to us to seize control. Not hand it to the traditional job market to solve. Sending out out old CV and hoping for a call.

A CNBC piece on landing a job after 50 states it plainly: “It’s about performance, not demographics” . The workers who get hired are the ones who focus on what they’ve accomplished and what they can do for the next employer—not on their years of experience.”

Your advantage isn’t your age. It’s your judgement. Your pattern recognition. You’ve seen economic crashes, tech bubbles, leadership fads. “Hot-shot” CEOs have come and gone. You’ve navigated it all.

That’s valuable. But that experience has to be:

1/ translated into value. (“30 years experience” isn’t ‘value’. It’s how a business benefits from that experience that matters.) And…

2/ it has to be communicated. An old CV or resume doesn’t hack it.

So, this is the work we do together.

What a Career Transition Coach Isn’t (Not Me, Anyway)

Here’s what I’m not going to do. I’m not going to tell you to “be more energetic” or “dress younger.” Yes. Show up with energy. Be healthy. Fit. Vital. Get a makeover. This isn’t bad advice.

But there’s a deeper problem. Being clear on your direction, your offering, your value.

That’s what we’ll be tackling head on. I’m not going to give you a template and send you on your way. Templates produce generic results. Generic results get ignored. You can get that from AI.

Having said that… Most of my over-50 clients have a pretty good idea of who they are. They don’t need a ton of psychometric tests. Or career guidance exercises. They’ve got a pretty good grasp of what they’re good at. And where they have some skill or information advantage. What they want and don’t want.

That’ll make the journey we take quicker. More effective. We want to accelerate you to a being visible, respected, and in-demand for your experience. A new chapter.

DOES THIS SOUND INTERESTING SO FAR? you can skip straight to a one-to-one conversation with me. It’s exploratory. No pitch or pressure. You’ll walk away with ‘mind-spark’ ideas for your unique situation, even if we don’t end up working together.

And besides your renewed clarity, here are the critical assets I’ll create for you.

Your Credibility & Communication Stack – the Missing Piece of the Puzzle

Next, I build your Credibility & Communication Stack. These are the communication assets you need in place to be 1/ understood, and 2/ taken seriously. So many miss this part of the picture.

Your CV/resume. Two pages. Sharp. Focused. Not a list of duties. A demonstration of value. What you’ve built, fixed, turned around. With numbers. Stories. Evidence. Modern.

Your LinkedIn profile. Your “command central.” Not neglected or average. A profile that says: this person knows what they do, who they help, and why they’re credible. A profile that works for you—attracting the right inquiries.

Your one-page consulting profile. If you’re going the consulting, advisory, or fractional route. A pitch document. What you do, who you do it for, how you do it, why you’re trusted. This is what you send when someone says, “tell me more.”

Your authority content. The first few LinkedIn posts. The article that positions you as someone who thinks about your field, not just someone who worked in it. This is how you become known.

You can be the greatest! But if you don’t put your message out with clarity, you won’t land the right opportunities. Oh, you’ll get some work. Now what you COULD get, however.

These pieces work together. Your CV feeds your LinkedIn. Your LinkedIn feeds your content. Your content attracts the right conversations. And those conversations lead to opportunities—jobs, contracts, consulting, advisory, fractional, and board roles.

Here’s what I see from thousands of clients over the years: Neglect. No core message of value. They look like regular job hunters. No “secret sauce” expressed (unique approach, framework for tackling problems, blend of knowledge). No punchy taglines. No “why hire me?” No stories – how you took over a mess, turned it around, how you now have a 5-step framework to solve that problem fast.

I get it! You’ve been busy! But it’s a new chapter now.

What happens if you don’t add this step?

  • Someone says, “you’re interesting, please, send me your resume.” You panic because it’s old. So you delay. You try to update. But you make a mess. You end up sending it a week late. Or not at all.

  • A VIP connection lands on your LinkedIn page: it’s neglected. The picture is from 2014. There’s nothing about what you do now. You lose an opportunity. And you lose respect.

  • An old colleague gets in touch about a consulting opportunity. You have nothing to send. No powerful one-pager outlining how you can help. So they have nothing to help sell you. You don’t hear back.

  • Your LinkedIn profile presents you as just an employee who’s worked ‘here and there.’ Instead of being a thought-leader, an expert in your field, a trend watcher, a problem solver. And so you don’t have the attention, the gravitas, the profile that wins visibility, respect, and opportunities.

Lost chances. I hear these stories almost every day.

Don’t let it happen to you. You can kinda do it yourself. True. But you’ll get stuck.

I’ll create your Communications and Credibility Stack. It’s a game changer.

Let’s get on a call.

My Background as a Career Transition Coach – Real Clients, Real Results

I’ve been doing this since 2003. Before that, I worked in recruitment for firms like BP, Shell, and Deloitte. I’ve seen thousands of CVs. I’ve written for CEOs, CFOs, COOs, and senior professionals across industries and continents.

One client—a former COO, over 55, high profile—came to me because what worked for him before didn’t work anymore. He didn’t need “CV writing.” He needed positioning. We got clear on his value, packaged it, and positioned him for the next phase. Not “I’m looking for a job.” But “I have massive value. I can help you grow.” That’s the shift.

It’s a world where recruiters will make you feel invisible. They’ll ghost you. They won’t provide honest feedback. And if they do, they’ll use lines like: “you’re overqualified.”

You’re best to grab the initiative. Take control. Make your own ‘magic’.

I’ll be your guide and hands-on partner on that journey.

How We Work Together

Step 1: The exploratory call. Fifteen minutes. No charge. No obligation. You tell me where you are and what you’re trying to solve. I’ll share two or three ideas that might help—even if we never speak again. I’ll share my service details. And the next step.

Step 2: We decide if it’s a fit. Sometimes it is. Sometimes it isn’t. If it isn’t, I’ll point you toward resources or a different approach.

Step 3: The work. If we proceed, we work together to define your direction and your value. We collect evidence. We discuss and clarify. Then I build your Credibility & Communication Stack. Your CV. Your LinkedIn. Your positioning. Your content. Hands-on, done-with-you (or done-for-you, depending on what you need).

Step 4: You’re ready. You have the pieces in place. You know what to say. You have something to send. You’re not “open for work.” You’re ready for the right opportunity. And I give you a roadmap of how to ‘venture forth’, how to get clients, and find opportunities.

Over-50’s Career Transition Coach Fees

The core service—the discovery (with one-to-one clarify discussions with me, with AI prompts you can use to explore your options), my end-to-end done-for you resume/CV and LinkedIn profile overhaul and positioning work—is USD650 (or my local geography ZAR7,500). If you’d like me to also create a set of authority-boosting cornerstone content for your LinkedIn profile, add USD250 (ZAR3,000).

A Final Thought

You have a mountain of value. You’ve had a long, successful career. You’ve seen things that younger professionals haven’t. You’ve solved problems they haven’t encountered yet.

But your value isn’t clear. Not in your own head. Certainly not in words anyone else can see.

That’s the problem. And it’s solvable.

The “Business YOU” is already there. It just needs to be articulated, packaged, and positioned.

That’s what I do. Let’s talk.

About Me, Gerard le Roux

I’m a personal marketing writer (‘ghostwriter’ or ‘copywriter’ maybe) and career transition coach. Since 2003, I’ve helped experienced professionals—often in their 50s and 60s—reposition themselves for new chapters: consulting, advisory, board roles, or executive positions.

Before this, I worked as a recruiter for firms like BP, Shell, and Deloitte. My advice has been published in national newspapers and I’ve spoken at MBA events for major universities. My clients are on every continent except Antarctica.

I work from a converted horse stable office in the Elgin Valley (apple farms, wine farms, mountains, forest) in the southern tip of South Africa, overlooking grassy paddocks and mountains.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

1. What does a career transition coach actually do?

A career transition coach helps you navigate a job change, industry shift, or role pivot—but the specifics matter. With me, it’s practical work: we clarify the value you bring (not your job title, but the problems you solve and results you deliver), articulate it in words, then build the tools to be taken seriously—your CV, LinkedIn profile, and positioning. Coaches don’t place you in jobs; I don’t have a secret employer list. What I do is help you become the person employers and clients want to find. That’s a different job, and a more lasting one.

2. Do I need a career transition coach, or can I just figure this out myself?

You can figure it out yourself—many people do. But here’s what I see with over-50 professionals: you’ve spent decades being great at what you do, and your personal marketing department never needed to exist because jobs came to you. Now the rules have changed. You can learn them, but it takes time and trial and error, while you compete against people who’ve had help. A coach compresses the timeline. I’ve seen thousands of CVs and know what gets ignored. The real question isn’t “can I do this myself?” It’s “how much is my time worth?”

3. How do I know if I actually need help, versus just needing a better CV?

Fair question. A better CV helps—but if that’s all you needed, you probably wouldn’t be reading this. Signs you need more: you’ve sent applications and heard nothing back, which usually means your positioning is the problem, not your effort; you can’t clearly answer “what do you do?” in a way that lands; your LinkedIn doesn’t reflect who you are now; or you know you have value but can’t articulate it. If any of those sound familiar, a CV rewrite alone won’t fix it. You need the full stack: clarity, positioning, and the tools.

4. How is career transition coaching different from therapy or life coaching?

Therapy addresses emotional health and past patterns; life coaching addresses broader personal growth. Career transition coaching is focused on one specific problem: how to reposition yourself for the next chapter of your professional life. That said, career transitions can be emotional—you might feel anger about being elbowed out, or uncertainty about your identity without a title. I don’t ignore that, but I don’t treat it either. I help you move through it by giving you something concrete to do: a plan, a tool, a next step. Action reduces anxiety. That’s what we build.

5. What does the process actually look like, step by step?

Step one is a fifteen-minute exploratory call—you tell me where you are, I share two or three ideas, no charge and no obligation. Step two: we decide if it’s a fit; sometimes it is, sometimes I point you elsewhere. Step three is the work: we clarify your value and build your Credibility & Communication Stack—CV, LinkedIn, positioning. You do the thinking; I do the writing and packaging. Step four: you’re ready, with the pieces in place and something to send. The timeline depends on you; most clients finish within a few weeks, longer if they want content built too.

6. How much does it cost, and why should I pay R7,500 when cheaper options exist?

Yes, you can get a CV written for R1,500—I’ve seen those CVs, and they look like templates, sound like everyone else, and get ignored. You’re not paying for document formatting. You’re paying for 20+ years of resume writing and career positioning, a former recruiter’s perspective on what actually gets attention, strategic clarity about your value, and a complete stack that works together. The R7,500 is an investment in your next chapter. If that feels like too much, I understand—my free call will still give you ideas you can use.

7. Will this work for me if I’m 55 or 60, not just “over 50”?

The principles are the same; the positioning shifts slightly. At 55 or 60, you have more experience to draw from and more to package carefully. You might be targeting consulting, board roles, or fractional work rather than a full-time executive position—the Credibility & Communication Stack adapts to that. I’ve written for CEOs, CFOs, and COOs in their 60s, and the work is the same: clarify value, package it, position it. Age doesn’t change the fundamentals. It changes the market you’re speaking to, and we adjust accordingly.

8. What’s the “AI-guided” part of your process?

I’ve developed a series of AI prompts that guide you through the questions that matter: What do you do? What problems do you solve? What have you built or fixed? Who benefits? And what opportunities do these open up to you? AI is very helpful with this. And it’s exciting to see what options pop up! The prompts help you think, they don’t write for you, and they don’t replace my judgment. Then I take your raw answers and information (from my questionnaire, our discussions, past psychometric tests, performance reviews, testimonials, old versions or your resume) and turn them into clear, compelling positioning. You get the benefit of structured thinking without doing the writing yourself. It’s a hybrid approach: you bring the substance, I bring the craft.

9. How do I know if you’re the right coach for me?

You don’t—not yet. That’s what the free call is for. Here’s what to look for in any coach, including me: real-world experience (I spent years as a recruiter before I started writing, so I understand how hiring decisions get made), a clear method (mine is the Credibility & Communication Stack, and it’s written down), proof (I have clients who’ve asked to talk, and I can connect you), and chemistry (do you trust this person, do they listen more than they talk—you’ll know in fifteen minutes). If I’m not right for you, I’ll tell you. I’d rather point you in the right direction than take your money for something that won’t serve you.

10. What happens after we build the stack? Do you just disappear?

No—but I also don’t want you to need me forever. After we build your Credibility & Communication Stack, you have tools that work: your CV is ready, your LinkedIn is positioned, and you know how to talk about your value. Some clients come back for content creation—LinkedIn posts, articles, a consulting profile refresh—some just need a check-in a few months later, and some move forward on their own. The goal is for you to be equipped, not dependent. If you want ongoing support, we can arrange that, but the core work is meant to last. You shouldn’t need a coach forever—you should need one once, done right.
